Duncan Grant (British, 1885-1978), The Farm Lane, oil on canvas mounted on board, signed and dated '52 lower left, bears exhibition labels verso, 63.5cm x 53.5cm, framed. Provenance: Sotheby's Britwell House 20-22 March 1979, lot 246. Bears labels verso for Leicester Galleries, Leicester Square, London, May '57; and Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport (1953?). Consigned from a deceased estate, Mrs J B – a lady who lived about eight miles from Honiton; with her husband, they were a keen collectors of art.
She became friends with the owner of the Lewes Gallery who sold Duncan Grant’s work, and subsequently, the owner of the gallery took Mrs J B to meet Duncan Grant.
About a year after Duncan Grant’s death, his daughter, Angelica Garnett held an open day at Charleston; Mrs J B went to that open day and, from this early stage, became a ‘Friend’ of Charleston House.
The picture has remained in Mrs J B’s home since its purchase at Sothebys sale (the family were able to provide the catalogue with Mr. B’s notes). The sale has been arranged by the daughter and son of Mrs J B, following a probate valuation that Chilcotts carried out in July 2022.
